The game of pétanque is simple and similar to bowls. The aim is to rest your boule closer to the jack than your opponent.  Pétanque is played on an area of rough ground, with metal boule rolled or tossed to the jack.

To score points in a game, you need to have your boule closer to the jack than your opponent. For every boule you have closer to the jack, you get one point. Games are played up to 13 points.

There are several types of shot. The first shot that most people try when they start is the standing up point. The aim of pointing is to point your boule close to the jack, so that you 'hold point'. The two basic types of pointing are standing up, and squatting down.  From both of these positions you can either lob, or roll the boule. The second type of shot is shooting. The aim of this is to remove an opponents boule which is close to the jack by trying to lob and land the boule onto your opponents boule. The perfect shot is called a carreu, where you boule stays in the place where your opponents boule once was. These are only the basic types of shot. Once you start playing the game, many new shots would be introduced to you.

The basic rules of petanque include drawing a circle on the ground from which each person in the team throws their boule from, the feet are not allowed to leave the ground from when the boule is thrown, to when it hits the ground. The jack has to be thrown a distance of 6-10 meters from the circle.
